Advanced / Autonomous emergency braking system AEBS / AEB

automatic braking

Advanced emergency braking system (AEBS) sometimes reffered to as Autonomous emergency braking (AEB), is an ADAS feature which uses sensors to detect other vehicles and potential danger situations, by calculating speed and distance, thereby predicting if a collision is imminent. The system will then apply emergency braking to minimise damage.

Key studies suggest that this safety system will reduce accidents by 27 percent, saving 8000 lives per year on roads in Europe. USA road figures by the NHTSA, suggest that AEBS would lead to a reduction of 28,000 collisions, equating to 12,000 fewer injuries.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) have made this type of system mandatory for new heavy goods vehicles in 2015.
